Mitt Romney Signs Marriage Pledge
Presidential candidate Mitt Romney joined other Republican candidates, Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum, in signing a pledge against gay marriage. This pledge was created by the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) and is more specifically crafted than a previous pledge which Romney refused to sign. The previous pledge was written by an Iowa group called Family Leader, and included controversial statements about the quality of family life for Blacks under slavery and now, and comments about Muslem Sharia Law.
Several GOP presidential candidates refused to back the Family Leader pledge, including Romney and Tim Pawlenty. Bachmann and Santorum were among those who signed the document.
These presidential candidates “stand head and shoulders above the crowd as marriage champions, for their willingness to go beyond words to commit to concrete actions,” Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), said in a statement.
In the NOM pledge, the signers committed to sponsoring a traditional marriage constitutional amendment; defending the Defense of Marriage Act (which President Obama has ordered the courts to stop defending); appointing judicial servants who are opposed to a constitutional right to gay marriage; investigating harassment claims against supporters of traditional marriage; and supporting legislation that would give people living in the District of Columbia the right to vote on marriage.
NOM is co-sponsoring a values voters bus tour that launches in Iowa on Monday, ending in Ames at a presidential straw poll on Aug. 13. Voters who believe strongly in social issues such as abortion and marriage traditionally play a key role in the Iowa presidential caucuses. [1]
